Dan Gutman Author Visit this Friday, June 11!!

Wear your favorite sports jersey to school on Friday.

Dan Gutman books will be on sale during the Italian Ice social on Thursday.

Congratulations to all Shongum students, parents, and teachers for a tremendous accomplishment – our students read a total of 1,000 Dan Gutman books in the past 3 weeks!! Thank you all for encouraging our children to read!

A special congratulations to the following classes for reading the most Dan Gutman books:
First place winners:

1st Grade – Mrs. Patterson’s class
2nd Grade – Mrs. Grunert’s class
3rd Grade – Mrs. Wurst’s class
4th Grade – Mrs. Sobol’s class
5th Grade – Mr. North’s class

Honorable mentions for their tremendous efforts and very close second place:

The PTA would like to congratulate the fourth and fifth grade students who participated in the Contest to have lunch with Dan Gutman. Encourage your child to bring their story to share with Dan Gutman. The winners are:

Walkathon Grade Times

Kindness Carnival

As you know, Shongum has been “Paving the Path of Kindness” this year. At the beginning of the school year, the children were challenged with the task of performing 1050 acts of kindness. We are happy to report that they successfully met their goal! We are so proud of their efforts. As a special reward, we have organized a Kindness Carnival to celebrate. The Carnival is scheduled for Friday, June 4, 2010 with a rain date of Tuesday, June 8, 2010, during school hours. This will be a fun event for our students and all of our staff members.

In order to prepare for the event, the children will have to bring the following with them to school on Carnival day:

  •  
    • Labeled water bottle
    • Bag lunch – no lunch boxes, no glass. Please use disposable containers. Also, a reminder that no nut products may be brought.
    • Labeled beach towel
    • Wear play clothes and sneakers
    • Sunscreen – must be applied at home

Dan Gutman Books On Sale

Great News – Dan Gutman books will be on sale this week in the All Purpose Room at lunch time!  These books will be sold at regular price and all of the proceeds will go directly to the PTA.  This sale is separate from the book fair’s buy one get one free.  Dan Gutman books will also continue to be sold through the pre-order form.  Children can purchase these books any day during the week, not only on the day that they are assigned to visit the book fair.  Happy Reading!

K-Kids Meeting 5/19

The K-Kids will be meeting on Wednesday, May 19th , from 3:15 – 3:45 in Room 1. K-Kids (Kiwanis Kids) is open to any student from Grades 2-5. We work together with Shongum classes on community service projects. This will be our last meeting for the year. We will discuss ways to “Make a Difference” this summer. Ways to beat the summertime blahs by helping out.

I hope to see many of you on Wednesday, May 19th . Thank you again for your time and volunteer work. Please remember a note for dismissal on May 19th .
